LA JOLLA — Senior Monay Lee scored a season-high 23 points and added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season as the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team rebounded from struggling second quarter to upset No. 21 UC San Diego 89-82 in front of 1,674 in attendance Friday night.
Although UCSD took a 43-42 lead at halftime, the Toros (12-6) outscored the Tritons 47-39 in the second half to not only preserve their now nine-game win streak, but also remain a perfect 10-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
CSUDH also sweeps the season series with UCSD (14-3, 9-2 CCAA). The Toros also won at RIMAC Arena for the first time since 2014.
Here is Lee after the win...
Lee wasn't the only Toro to have a double-double night. Kielyn Wilson added a dozen points and 14 boards for her third of the season. Imari Brown also had a stellar performance with 24 of the bench's 28 points.
After scoring only four points in the first half, Breanne Garcia rebounded in the second and added 11 in the second for 15 points.
The Toros finished the night shooting 43.8 percent from the floor but dominated the rebounding department 47-39.
Free throws was also another helpful ingredient to the win for the Toros as they had 28.
UCSD was led by Taylor Tanita, who finished with 21 points and five assists. Jamie Katuna had 18 points and Beth Mounier had 17 to round out the Tritons in double figures.
The Toros quickly jumped ahead to a 9-0 start that eventually produced a 26-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the tide shifted over to the Tritons in the second quarter. UC San Diego started a run that allowed them to take a 28-26 lead with 6:15 remaining at the half.
After UCSD's Jamie Katuna made a layup with eight seconds left, Kielyn Wilson's half-court shot at the buzzer banked in to at least send the Toros into the locker room trailing 43-42.
CSUDH will now make a visit to Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
