Toros Still Perfect in CCAA After 75-61 Over Humboldt State

CARSON -- Welcoming last year's reigning Co-California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season champion Humboldt State to the Torodome, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros passed another league test in a 75-61 decision, staying perfect in league play at 8-0.

Senior Breanne Garcia tied for game-high honors with 19 points as CSUDH dominated on the boards to the tune of a 49-33 edge.

The two-time CCAA tournament champion Toros got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first seven points in the first 3:10 minute of play.  HSU finally got on the board one possession later, but a Julia Poecksteiner triple and a pair of Garcia free throws gave CSUDH a 12-2 lead en route to a commanding 24-11 lead after one period of play.

Humboldt State regained its footing in the second quarter, equaling CSUDH's 16-point output to enter the half down 40-27, before outscoring the Toros by three in the third to enter the final quarter with the Toros leading 55-45.

In the fourth, however, after the Jacks cut their deficit to single digits at 55-49, a Garcia layup and Kielyn Wilson bucket surrounded a HSU make, giving the Toros control of the game once again 59-51.

The Jacks got to within seven again a few possessions later, but the Toros built their lead to double figures after a pair of Femi Hamilton freebies put CSUDH up 66-55 with 3:40 left, with three free throws by Garcia after a Lumberjack technical foul and an ensuing Garcia triple brought the hosts to a 71-58 lead with under three minutes left in the game, all but sealing the win.

The lead reached 16 at 74-58 after another Garcia triple in the eventual 75-61 win, keeping the Toros atop the CCAA standings.

Monay Lee added 14, with Wilson and Imari Brown both adding 10 as CSUDH finished shooting 46.4% from the floor, with Lee's eight boards pacing all rebounders.

CSUDH's defense also held the Jacks to just 19 field goals, good for a 34.5% clip from the floor.

The Toros look to make it 9-0 tomorrow night as perennial power Cal Poly Pomona visits Carson for a 5:30 pm first tip.
