Toros Defeat Cal Baptist to Give Joe Flanagan 300th Win

RIVERSIDE – Tony Alfaro scored his first goal of the season in the 39th minute, Joey Chica and Mike Diaz both found the back of the net and the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team survived a 100-plus degree scorch in Riverside to post a 3-1 victory over Cal Baptist to give 22nd-year head coach Joe Flanagan his 300th win Tuesday evening.

"It's a great feeling and I couldn't have done it without Jeff Tuttle and Drew Rea, who are great coaches and strive to make our program highly competitive year in and year out," begins Flanagan, about his two right hand men.

"I have to thank our players as well since we've had a lot of great players and people come through our program over the years who have set the standard for CSUDH soccer," he continues.

"I want to thank all of them, and we are looking forward to this year and hopefully many more to come."

Although the Lancers (0-2-1) snuck in a goal with 1:03 left, the Toros (2-1) also got excellent defending from Alfaro and keeper Chase Gentry, who stopped three shots as well as a penalty kick midway through the first half.

CSUDH outshot Cal Baptist 20-9 with Lancer keeper Noah Oyler making seven saves.

After a foul called inside CSUDH's box called for a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, Gentry guessed correctly by going to his left for the catch and preserve the scoreless draw.

In the 39th minute, Gilberto Rocha fired a shot from the penalty marker and was saved by the keeper but Alfaro charged and sent the rebound home for the goal.

The Toros would enter intermission leading, 1-0, but it was in the 66th minute when Chica delivered the match-winning goal. Jaime Rios, from midfield, connected to Chica who dribbled down the left side and slotted the ball under Oyler for the goal.

It was déjà vu all over again in the 76th minute. Oyler blocked a shot again but Diaz took a shot off the rebound for the insurance goal and his second in as many matches.

The Toros, winner of two straight, have reached the halfway point of a four-match road swing and will now head to Idaho this weekend starting with Northwest Nazarene Saturday at 5 p.m.
