Toros Can't Beat the Odds in 5-Set Loss to Dominican Before Falling in Sweep to CBU

HAYWARD / BELMONT -- Looking to rebound from last night's sweep at the hands of Notre Dame de Namur at the Route 92 Showdown, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team took a two sets to one lead after capturing sets 1 and 3, but Dominican roared back to take the final two sets en route to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Toros on day two of the tournament.

Newcomer Vanessa Phyakeo led CSUDH with 16 kills in the loss before Cal Baptist took a 3-set sweep to bring the Toros to 1-3 over the weekend.

The Toros roared to a convincing 25-15 first set win, holding the Penguins to just seven kills in the runaway.  DUC knotted the set in the second despite just 10 kills in the frame, the difference being CSUDH making three more errors.  The two teams then split the next two sets by identical 25-21 scores before Dominican inched out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding frame.

Two attack errors and a Phyakeo putaway got the Toros to within 6-4, with another Phyakeo blast knotting the fifth set at 9-9.  The Toros held match point at 14-13 on a Bridget Heins hammer, only to have Dominican rally with the final three points of the set to take the five-set thriller.

Brown finished with 30 assists while Cathryn Lopez led the Toros with 26 digs.

Against Cal Baptist, the Lancers held the Toros to just a .066 hitting percentage in the sweep, with Rylee Kiger and Claire Autry leading the Toros with six kills each.

Lopez provided the bright spot with 17 digs, but CBU boasted a pair of Lancers with at least 10 putaways, while setter Jordyn Siko tallying 37 assists in the sweep.

CSUDH results tournament play next weekend at the CSUSB hosted Coyote Classic, facing Western New Mexico and Fort Lewis College on Friday, September 11.
