Toros Sweep Through Fort Lewis After Early Day Loss to WMNU

SAN BERNARDINO -- Senior Alijah Gunsaulus hammered home a match-high 12 kills to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Fort Lewis College to conclude day one of the Coyote Challenge.

The Toros improve to 2-4 on the year with the win.

Against FLC, CSUDH roared back from a 15-9 deficit in set one to knot the frame at 20-20 on a Skyhawk error, and took the lead one point later on a Vanessa Phyakeo blast.  The two teams tied the game twice more until the Toros closed out the set with three straight points on kills by Rylee Kiger and Gunsaulus, and an attack error by FLC after a strong serve by Cathryn Lopez.

CSUDH led wire-to-wire in the second behind the strong serving of Dana Brown, Kiger and Briana Boyd, pushing its lead to 15-6 on the early going.  FLC would get no closer than seven points the rest of the frame, with a Gunsaulus exclamation point giving the designated home team a 2-0 lead.

The Toros continued their momentum after the break to the tune of a 4-1 lead, only to see FLC claw its way back and knot the game at 6, 7, 8 and 9 points.  That's when Brown's service ace spurred a 4-1 run that gave CSUDH breathing room.

FLC, however, found its rhythm and tied the game at 14-14, only to fall back on Kiger's strength of serve as the Toros put the match away on a Phyakeo hammer to give CSUDH the sweep.

Dominguez Hills hit .203 for the match, with Gunsaulus, Kiger and Golsch leading the offensive charge.  Brown and Kiger combined for 40 of the team's 42 assists, with Brown also pacing the defense with 20 digs.

Earlier in the day, sophomore Rylee Kiger led all Toros with 15 kills while Gunsaulus added 13 and a .355 hitting percentage, but Cal State Dominguez Hills couldn't maintain its momentum after taking a 25-12 first set over Western New Mexico.

In that frame, CSUDH came out on fire to the tune of a .333 hitting percentage, putting away 13 balls against just three hitting errors.

That would be the extent of the Toros' success against WNMU, however, as the Mustangs answered to take the next three frames.

Claire Autry added six kills in the setback, with Golsch adding five.
