Toros Split on Day One of Route 92 Showdown

BELMONT -- Sophomore Rylee Kiger tallied team-high totals of 17 kills and 31 assists while senior Dana Brown totaled 16 digs and four service aces as Cal State Dominguez Hills opened 2015 with a 25-21, 30-32, 25-19, 25-20 win over Montana State Billings on day one of the Route 92 Tournament.

Host Notre Dame de Namur, however, took 3-set sweep in the nightcap to move the Toros to 1-1 on the new year.

The Toros opened up the match against the Yellowjackets late in the first set, turning an 8-8 tie into a 14-11 advantage on a Bridget Heins kill after a Kiger feed.  CSUDH kept its lead around the 4-point mark the rest of the set before a Morelia Castro bomb at 24-21 gave the Toros an early lead in the match.

After MSUB took an epic second set to knot the match at one set each, the Toros came back strong in the third, leading wire-to-wire after making just three errors on 43 swings, good for a .302 hitting percentage en route to a 25-19 win.

That momentum was too much for MSUB to overcome as CSUDH capitalized on eight hitting errors by Billings in the fourth set, running out to a 9-2 lead early and withstanding a late MSUB charge to come away with a 25-20 and a win in its season opener.

Four Toros went for at least 10 kills, with freshman Cecelia Lucas tallying 6 block assists to lead all players.  Kiger hit .359 for the match, also adding 4 block assists in the win.

Against the hosts, however, the Toros could never find their offense as the squad hit just .017, making just two less errors than their total number of kills.

Kiger and Heins led the Cardinal and Gold with six klls each, while Brown chipped in 11 assists and Cathryn Lopez 12 digs to top CSUDH in those categories.

CSUDH makes the 18 mile trek from Belmont to Hayward for a 9 am match against Dominican University, before trekking back to Belmont to take on Cal Baptist in the Showdown's final match, starting at 4:30 pm.
