Inspired Toros Sweep Past Broncos in rare Midweek clash

CARSON -- Freshman Breanna Golsch put down 13 kills as Cal State Dominguez Hills hit .239 on the night in an inspired sweep over visiting Cal Poly Pomona despite losing its heart and soul due to an ankle sprain near the end of the second set, yet dominating a team that had won six of its last seven coming into tonight.

Five Toros hit over .240 as CSUDH snapped a two-match skid, with the team posting a season-high in hitting percentage, and a season-low in errors.

Check out Golsch's postmatch interview.

The Toros came out like a team possessed, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead behind the strong serve of Claire Autry.

Serving continued to be an asset to the hosts as Cathryn Lopez pushed the Toros to a 14-7 lead, with Sarah Greenland getting into the serving act to bring CSUDH to a 20-9 cushion en route to the 25-13 first set win.

In the second, the teams split the first 24 points, tying on eight occasions, the last coming at 12-12.  With Pomona serving one of its eight errors on the night, the Toros went on a 5-0 run to take control of the match until a Bronco attack error gave CSUDH a 23-16 lead.

The edge, however, came with a price as setter Dana Brown landed on a Bronco player going for a block, suffering a slight ankle sprain.

That proved inspiring to the hosts as Vanessa Phyakeo unleashed back-to-back blasts to give the Toros a 2-0 lead.

After intermission and with Rylee Kiger stepping up as the team's new setter, a pair of Bronco errors gave the Toros a 5-2 lead in the third, only to have CPP find its rhythm and take its biggest lead of the night at 12-8.

A Cecelia Lucas hammer followed by a CPP misfire brought the Toros to within two, and kills by Alijah Gunsaulus and Phyakeo knotted the set at 13-13.

With CPP up 17-15 on a Nicoletta Stork kill, another Bronco service error followed by a Golsch putaway brought the Toros back, with another Golsch blast giving the hosts the lead for good.

CPP made one final push by knotting the game at 19-19, but the Toros, behind a pair of Phyakeo kills, and a Kiger ace brought CSUDH to the brink of a sweep at 24-22, and the eighth and final service error of the night by the visitors sealed the 3-0 win.

Phyakeo added 9 kills and Gunsaulus 7, with Brown dishing 19 assists in the victory.  Greenland saved 13 balls to lead the Toros, with Golsch adding 12 and Lopez 11 to give CSUDH a +7 in digs.

The Toros take to the road this weekend for matches at Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State, with both matches starting at 7 pm.
