Toros Win Battle Up Front in 5-Set Victory at East Bay

HAYWARD -- Bolstered by its athletic and long middles, Cal State Dominguez Hills roared back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to stun host Cal State East Bay in a 5-set thriller and pick up its second straight win.

Vanessa Phyakeo (pictured) paced the Cardinal and Gold with 13 kills while Cecelia Lucas and Claire Autry tied for match-high honors with six blocks each as CSUDH improves to 5-11, 3-5 CCAA.

The Toros hit just .114 for the match, but got points when it needed to in the fifth by putting away 8 balls compared to just 2 errors in the 15-10 win.

Breanna Golsch added 11 kills in the marathon while Cathryn Lopez with 27, Sarah Greenland with 24 and Rylee Kiger with 20 gave CSUDH a trio of players with at least 20 digs to complement the Toro offense.

After the two teams split the first 14 points of the match, the visitors reeled off four-straight points to take an 11-7 lead, only to have the hosts use a 12-4 run to take their turn at having momentum.

A Lucas kill, Pioneer attack error and block assists by Alijah GUnsaulus and Lucas brought the Toros back to a tie, before Briana Boyd's serve pushed CSUDH to a 23-21 lead.

CSUEB would bend but not break, knotting the set at 24-24, but a Pioneer service error and Phyakeo hammer on successive points gave the guests set one.

After East Bay rolled to wins in sets two and three, the Toros roared back themselves in the fourth, turning a 7-4 deficit into a 12-7 lead behind seven Lopez serves, including an ace to cap the run.

CSUDH built its lead to as much as 23-14 behind Autry's serve, holding off a late East Bay run to even the set at 2-2.

The Toros used that momentum in the finale as they led wire-to-wire en route to the 15-10 decision, scoring the match's final two points on kills by Golsch and Morelia Castro.

CSUDH used a 13-7 edge in blocks and a 9-6 difference in services aces in the win, withstanding two Pioneers in Darlene Lee and Angie Maina, who tallied over 40 digs to set and surpass the school record.

With the win, the Toros moved into 10th place in the CCAA and will travel to San Francisco State tomorrow night after the Gators upended perennial power Cal State L.A. in four sets.  First serve is set for 7 pm in the Main Gymnasium.
