Coyotes Eclipse Toros in Rare Night Game in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team had one last chance to net the equalizer with only seconds remaining, but came up short and Cal State San Bernardino held on to a 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win in a rare under-the-lights matchup Sunday.

The Coyotes (4-3-2, 3-0-1 CCAA) and Toros (1-7-0, 0-4-0 CCAA) played to a scoreless draw until the 74th minute, when luck fell onto CSUSB's side. Denae Verdine took a shot from the top of the box that deflected off the crossbar and bounced into the goal.

CSUDH had several opportunities of its own throughout the match. One notable highlight was right before halftime, when Johana Rosas dribbled towards the goal from the left side and her shot just missed.

With the clock winding down to zero, the Toros were awarded one last opportunity, a free kick, from about 25 yards out. Theresa Butcher sent the ball into the crowded box looking for the one last shot but didn't come through.

The Toros outshot the Coyotes 16-11 overall, with Elisa Martin needing to make five saves. On the Coyotes end, Megan Vina had to make six of seven total saves.

In honor of celebrating 50 years, CSUSB brought in portable lights to cover the Coyote Premier Field throughout the weekend.

CSUDH returns to Toro Stadium to begin a four-match homestand, which begins with UC San Diego Friday at 7 p.m. The matchup is also the Toros' Think Pink promotion.
