Seven Unlucky for Toros in 3-1 Loss at No. 17 Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO -- Three players went for seven kills at No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino tonight, but the Coyotes paid no mind to numerology as CSUSB took a 3-1 win over the Toros, depriving the visitors of their first win over the perennial power since 1991.

Claire Autry was one kill better with eight in the setback as the Toros hit .152 for the match, but CSUSB's .229 hitting percentage was too tough to overcome as CSUDH falls to 3-10, 1-4 CCAA.

In the first, kills by Autry, Bridget Heins and Cecelia Lucas gave the Toros a 7-4 lead, only to have the Coyotes roar back to the tune of a 24-20 lead on a Toro attack error, putting the set away on a Malika O'Brien hammer.

CSUSB continued its momentum in the second set by jumping to an 8-3 lead, keeping CSUDH at arm's length the rest of the set en route to an easy 25-11 win.

Looking to make a clean sweep on a warm Friday evening, the Coyotes made six errors and hit just .081 in set three while the visitors sizzled with 13 kills and just two miscues (.344), with the strong serve of Morelia Castro and Cathryn Lopez setting the stage for the 25-15 win, with Lopez serving out the final six points of the frame.

An Alijah Gunsaulus putaway pushed the Cardinal and Gold to a 4-1 lead in the fourth, a lead that grew to 8-4 after a Yote swing went awry.

With the Toros up 12-8 after another CSUSB error, the Yotes found their rhythm and scored seven of the next eight points to take a 15-13 lead.

CSUDH, however, again used Castro's serve to get back into the match, taking a 19-17 lead and putting pressure on the hosts.

That's when CSUSB turned it up a notch, scoring the next six points to push the Toros to the brink at 23-19, and closing out the match with the final two points.

Lopez added 23 digs to her strong serving while Dana Brown dished 35 assists in the loss.

The Toros continue their southern California roadtrip tomorrow night at UC San Diego, which swept past Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.
