Toros Go the Distance to Pick Up First CCAA Win of Year

CARSON -- The third time is definitely a charm.  After dropping both matches of its first home weekend last Friday and Saturday, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team picked up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association win tonight in a 5-set thriller over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay.

Bridget Heins' 13 kills led four Toros with at least 10 kills as the win snapped a five-match skid, improving to 3-9, 1-3 CCAA.

"It feels great to come back and win a close match against a good team," Heins begins, obviously ecstatic.

"It was a total team effort, everyone was pumped and we picked each other up all night and fought until the last point."

Coming off a four-set loss against upstart Stanislaus State three nights ago, the Toros turned a tie game into a 10-6 lead in the first, courtesy of a Rylee Kiger kill.

The Otters rattled off five straight to take the lead, only to see the Toros roar back behind Heins and Autry and a couple CSUMB errors en route to a 25-20 win.

After the set, CSUMB regrouped to hold the hosts to negative hitting percentages over sets two and three before the Toros regrouped themselves to even the match at 2-2 after Morelia Castro ended the set with one of her 10 blasts.

In the fifth, the Otters looked like they would roll to an easy win after taking a 4-1 lead.  Behind kills by Vanessa Phyakeo, Claire Autry and Heins, however, CSUDH caught the Otters at 6-6, and took the lead on a CSUMB attack error.

The two teams then tied five more times with the Otters taking a 13-11 lead after a Toro service error and Amber Tygard kill, prompting CSUDH head coach to call a time out.

That strategy worked as three Otter attack errors and a Castro blast put the finishing touches on the comeback, sending the Tuesday night Toro crowd into a frenzy.

Autry finished with 12 and Phyakeo 10 as CSUDH hit .126 on the night, with Dana Brown dishing 51 assists.  Defense played a key role with five Toros saving at least 10 balls led by Cathryn Lopez's 20.

Adeva echoed Heins' sentiments, saying "The team has continuously improved every match so far and it was great to see them step up and get the win tonight."

CSUDH next takes to the road for arguably its toughest roadtrip, battling perennial powers CS San Bernardino on Friday, followed by a date at UC San Diego on Saturday.
