Volleyball Runs Out of Gas in 4-Set Loss to Stanislaus State

CARSON -- Fighting back from a two-sets-to-none deficit, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team fought back to take set three against visiting Stanislaus State by a 25-17 count, but the Warriors returned the favor in set four to take the decision and keep the Toros winless in the CCAA.

Senior Alijah Gunsaulus rattled off a team-best 11 kills in the loss that dropped CSUDH to 2-9, 0-3 CCAA.

Coming off a tough loss to Chico State last night, the Toros started slow against the Warriors, who were coming off their own loss last night at Cal State L.A.

Down 11-6 in the first, a Cecelia Lucas blast stopped a 4-0 run by Stanislaus, spurring the Toros to take 5 of the next 6 points and tie the game at 11.

Stanislaus, however, used a 9-1 run to take control of the set, eventually taking the 25-17 win.

The visitors again stormed out of the gate in the second set to the tune of a 14-7 edge before Breanna Golsch's strong serve brought the Cardinal and Gold back to 17-16, the last coming on a Gunsaulus blast.

That was the extent of CSUDH's momentum, however, as the Warriors scored 6 of the final 10 points to come away with the win.

After the break, the Toros regrouped to cut their deficit to just one set after scoring the 9 of the final 10 points, including Gunsaulus hammering down three of the final five points, with four coming on the strong serving of Cathryn Lopez.

The Toros looked to push the match to five sets after taking a 9-5 lead early.  The Warriors, however, off to their best start in the history of the program, would not relent, scoring four-straight points to tie the frame, and then another four straight to take the lead for good after trailing 14-13.

That proved the impetus for Stanislaus' final surge as the Warriors withstood a 13 to 6 block differential by scoring the match's final seven points to put away the young and pesky Toros.

Setter Maddi Seidl set the table for Stanislaus with 43, while contributing 21 digs in the match.

The Toros dominated at the net, with Lucas leading the charge with 8, and Dana Brown chipping in 6 and Morelia Castro 4.

CSUDH will continue hosting duties on Tuesday as Cal State Monterey Bay visits Carson, for a 5 pm first serve.
