Jacks Edge Toros 2-1 in CCAA Opener at StubHub Center

CARSON – Megan Guzman's second goal of the season evened the match one apiece but an early second-half goal allowed Humboldt State to escape with a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association opening win at the StubHub Center Friday evening.

Courtney Rebata found the back of the net twice for the Jacks (4-2-0, 1-0-0 CCAA), scoring in the seventh and 49th minutes.

Guzman nailed the equalizer in the 19th minute. Goalkeeper Alexia Flippen made three saves on a warm evening.

Despite the defeat, the Toros (1-4-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) pressed the Jacks defense, outshooting their opponents 32-13. CSUDH also edged Humboldt State in the shots on goal category 9-5.

Trailing by one reaching the midpoint of the first half, the Toros were able to beat the Jacks defense with Guzman's goal. Naomi Willey headed a pass to Guzman for the finishing touch.

The goal started to bring more confidence in the Toros the remainder of the half. In the 26th minute, Katrina Cohen had a shot hit the crossbar and Kendra Serrano tried to send the rebound back into the net but was saved by Jack goalkeeper Caitlin Plese.

CSUDH's second closest chance to jump ahead on the scoreboard came at the start of the second half. Gabrielle Pena found an uncovered Johana Rosas at the center of the goal but she gave too much power and the shot went high.

The Jacks' go-ahead goal followed about a minute later when Rebata headed a cross pass from Alex Jenkins.

Plese finished the evening having to make seven saves for Humboldt State.

The Toros return to Toro Stadium Sunday for another CCAA matchup against Sonoma State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
