Wildcats Spoil Home Opener in 3-1 Volleyball Win

CARSON -- Freshman Cecelia Lucas hit .357 with a team-high 14 kills, but visiting Chico State hit .225 as a team compared to .099 for Cal State Dominguez Hills as the Wildcats spoiled CSUDH's home opener in a 3-1 win.

The Toros fall to 2-8, 0-2 CCAA with the setback.

CSUDH got off to a quick start behind Morelia Castro's quick hands on both offense and defense, putting away two balls and combining with Alijah Gunsaulus for a pair of stuffs.

The Wildcats, however, capitalized on Jill Kreymborg's strong serve to turn a 20-19 edge into a 25-21 first set win.

Castro again enjoyed a strong start in set two, giving the Toros a 10-6 lead early, with Gunsaulus giving CSUDH a 13-7 lead four points later.

The Wildcats went on an 11-3 run to take the lead at 18-16, before a Lucas hammer and Briana Boyd service ace knotted the contest at 18-18.

Lucas then took over with three straight kills to put the Toros in the driver's seat at 22-19, with a Wildcat attack error at set point evening the match at 1-1.

After a forgettable third set in which the Toros made eight errors with only three kills, CSUDH looked to make the fourth competitive behind Castro, Lucas and Breanna Golsch, taking an early 6-3 lead.

The visitors wouldn't break, however, outscoring the Toros 12-3 to take control of the set and enjoying a 21-16 lead late.

Behind Lucas and Castro, the Toros made one final push to cut their deficit to 24-21 and induce a Wildcat timeout, only to have CSUC put the match away on an Olivia Mediano kill.

Castro finsihed with 10 kills and 6 blocks, with Cathryn Lopez netting a match-high 27 digs with her sprawling defense.

CSUDH will host Stanislaus State tomorrow night after the Warriors suffered their first defeat of the year at the hands of Cal State L.A., a 3-0 sweep.
