Toros Keep Two Streaks Going in CCAA Opening Win Over Jacks

CARSON – Make that five straight wins overall, and inside the StubHub Center too, for Cal State Dominguez Hills' 23rd-ranked men's soccer team.

The Toros scored all three of their goals in the first half and had not looked back in the latter period in their 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association opening win against Humboldt State Friday evening.

In addition to the conference-opening win, the Toros improve to a perfect 5-0-0 when playing inside the home of the LA Galaxy.

CSUDH (5-1-0, 1-0-0 CCAA) got goals from Mike Dias, Tony Alfaro and Joey Chica while on the other end Chase Gentry made only one save before turning over the goalkeeping duties to Benito Gonzalez the final 20 minutes of the match.

On paper, the Toros outshot the Jacks (1-4-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) 25-8 overall, 10-2 in goal. Humboldt State netminder Christopher Cherms made six saves.

While the Toros controlled the match, especially in the first half, they never gave any momentum to the Jacks. It wasn't until the 83rd minute when Humboldt State got on the board.

It wasn't until the 36th minute when the Toros broke the ice. Dias knocked in his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a rebound shot.

The Jacks were severely punished in the 39th minute when Kenji Murao was received a red card for using his hand to knock away a Toro goal. The Toros would get the second goal on Tony Alfaro's successful penalty kick.

Joey Chica provided the insurance goal right before intermission. Israel Murguia crossed to Chica despite the Jacks effort to clear the ball from their zone.

CSUDH returns to Toro Stadium Sunday when they welcome Sonoma State. Kickoff is set at the conclusion of the women's match at approximately 2 p.m.
