Broncos Make Quick Work of Toros in Sweep as CCAA Play Begins

POMONA -- Heading into California Collegiate Athletic Association play after concluding a pair of non-conference weekends, Cal State Dominguez Hills suffered a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Cal Poly Pomona tonight after being limited to just a .124 hitting percentage.

Senior Dana Brown led all players with 23 sets in the loss as the Toros dip to 2-7 overall, and 0-1 in CCAA play.

The two teams played even to begin the contest, with the Toros taking a 12-9 lead early.  CPP, however, roared back with 6 consecutive points to gain control, only to see momentum swing back to Cardinal and Gold as CSUDH knotted the set at 17, 18, 19 and 20.

CPP again made a charge, scoring five of the final six points in the first set win.

Things didn't get much better in set two as the hosts took a 7-3 lead, and withstood a Toro rally midway through the frame to take the eventual 25-18 decision.

After intermission, each team came out determined to claim the set, splitting the first 18 points of the frame.

CPP then took control by pushing its lead to 19-13, until Breanna Golsch and Cathryn Lopez brought the Toros back with their strong serve to a 21-21 deadlock.

Unlike the first two sets, the Toros prevented the Broncos from pulling away.  However, like the first two sets, CPP eventually prevailed on a service ace on match point, sealing the sweep.

Golsch tied for match-high honors with 9 kills with Rylee Kiger adding 7 in the loss.  No Toro reached double figures in digs as Brown and Kiger shared team-high honors with 7.

CPP dominated at the net to the tune of a 16-6 edge in blocks, while hitting .225 as a team.

CSUDH finally kicks off its home schedule on Friday, hosting Chico State for a 7 pm first tip.  While supplies last, posters autographed by the volleyball team will be given out to fans in attendance.
