Toros Rally Comes Up Short in Loss to Metro State

DENVER – The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team battled from start to finish but couldn't break Metro State University at Denver's goalkeeper as the Toros dropped a 3-1 decision to the Roadrunners on a hot Sunday afternoon.

Louise Kallin was the lone Toro to beat MSU keeper Breanna Flores in the 41st minute.

Alexia Flippen, returning to her goalkeeping duties after sitting out against Regis Friday, made nine of 11 team saves while her counterpart Flores made nine.

The Roadrunners (3-1-0) jumped ahead 1-0 in the 20th minute. The Toros (1-3-0) were close to clearing the corner kick, as it appeared Lindsey Armstrong missed the header by a few inches. But Lauren Kaufman was there to knock the ball into the goal.

Metro State added on to the lead in the 34th minute when Korena Perales' shot from 25 yards out hit the left post and into the goal.

The Toros got a little bit of spark offensively when head coach Aileen Nasypany made some substitutions, bringing in Johana Rosas and Naomi Willey.

Rosas got the momentum started when she dribbled across midfield and connected Willey on the left side. Willey brought the ball back into the middle and took a shot from the top of the box but was saved by keeper Breanna Flores.

After bringing the ball back to midfield, Kallin dribbled as far as she can go on the right side and fired an angle shot that found the left corner of the net for the Toros goal in the 41st minute.

Similar to the opening period, CSUDH had to play defense for nearly 20 minutes into the second half. It wasn't until 67th minute when the Toros had their best shot in the period. Katrina Cohen shot a loose ball from the top of the box but missed the right side of the goal.

Since then, the offensive momentum shifted to the Toros.

Kylee Patterson, who had recently checked in at the 73rd minute, set up a cross to the right post, but two Toros couldn't capitalize on the shot and instead was cleared by Flores.

Kallin looked to tie the score with 14 minutes remaining when her shot inside the penalty box was beautifully deflected off Flores left hand.

The Roadrunners took a 3-1 lead off a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

The Toros return home to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday against Humboldt State at the StubHub! Center. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
