Palmer Walk-Off in 10th Pushes Toros Past No. 26 UCSD, Before Falling to No. 18 Broncos

STOCKTON -- Sometimes, life really is like a box of chocolates.  Seeing his first action of the year as a redshirt freshman after being inserted into the CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament semifinal game in the bottom of the 10th inning, pinch-running pitcher Forrest Riley took off from first base after Johnny Palmer laced a line drive into the left-center field gap, and raced home ahead of the UCSD's relay to give the Toros a dramatic walk-off 3-2 win over the 26th-ranked Tritons, eliminating UCSD from the CCAA Tournament.

CSUDH then fell to No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona in the championship round, with the Broncos taking the game 4-0 and the CCAA Title in the process, the first ever for the program.

Here's Palmer's game-winner:

Game one against the Tritons had all the makings of a playoff, do-or-die contest, with each player on the roster available in this elimination contest.

For the first time in the tournament, CSUDH got on the board first after a Brady Conlan single with two outs set the stage for Kevin Lenik, whose sharp single to left was bobbled by the left fielder, allowing Conlan to scamper home all the way from first base.

The Toros doubled their lead in the fourth after Conlan and Lenik began the frame with singles.  After a Juan Avena sacrifice moved Conlan to third, Daniel Matienzo brought him in with a single to left field.

UCSD, however, answered back with two in the fifth, knocking starter Albert Flores from the game.

That's where the score remained despite scoring opportunities by both squads, who combined to leave 10 runners on base in the final three innings of play.

In the 10th, Jesse Oropeza, who entered in the game as a pinch-runner in the ninth and stayed in to play first base in the 10th, reached on a Triton fielding error with one out, bringing in Riley to pinch run.

Palmer then came up with the big hit to plate Riley, setting off a raucous celebration that eliminated the Tritons and sent the Toros to the championship round against the Broncos.

Against CPP, the Toro tank seemed to run out as it was all green and gold from the get-go.

The Broncos didn't allow the first Toro hit until the fourth, a Kamran Young single with two out, already having taken a 1-0 lead in the first.

CPP added two more in the seventh, and an insurance run in the ninth to cap the scoring, withstanding potential Toro rallies in seventh and eighth to preserve the win, and earn the program's first CCAA Tournament title.

For their efforts, Conlan, Young, Adrian Guzman and Joshua Flores all were named to the CCAA All-Tournament team.

CSUDH, now sitting at 30-24 and having defeated the No. 7 and No. 5 seeds in the NCAA West Region, will have to wait to see if those two victories were good enough to push them up two spots into the top 6, with the top 6 schools making the NCAA postseason.
