Toros Club Four More Home Runs in 9-3 Win Over Coyotes

CSUDH needs one win or one CSULA loss on Saturday to qualify for CCAA Tournament

SAN BERNARDINO -- Inspired by four home runs in last night's blowout, the Toros clubbed four more dingers at Cal State San Bernardino in tonight's 9-3 win, with senior Kevin Brown picking up the win after throwing 7.2 innings and fanning eight Coyotes.

Danny Matienzo, Juan Avena, Brady Conlan and, you guessed it, Kamran Young all went deep as the Toros crept to within 2.0 games of Cal State L.A., which dropped a 6-1 decision to UC San Diego in Los Angeles and still faces the CCAA's deduction of .092 at the end of the regular season.

With that deduction, the Toros need just one win or one Cal State L.A. loss in the final two games to earn the fourth and final seed in the CCAA Tournament, with Cal Poly Pomona, the Tritons and Cal State Monterey Bay already having clinched berths, but remain fighting for the top seed.

The Toros, who improved to 26-22, 20-18 CCAA with the win, continued their power surge in the second as Danny Matienzo smacked his first home run in Cardinal and Gold, sending a solo shot to left field for a quick 1-0 lead.

That digit didn't remain on the scoreboard for long as Young did it again, sending a 2-0 pitch to dead center to bring home Brandon Polizzi before him for a 3-0 lead, with Brady Conlan making it 4-0 with a back-to-back jack.

The Coyotes got on the board in the third to make it 5-1 Toros, but Juan Avena put the Toros back up by five on a big fly to right.

After the hosts creeped to within 6-3 with a pair of single runs in the sixth and seventh, the Toros put the game away in the eighth with three runs on a Daryl Donerson drew a bases-loaded walk, an Adrian Guzman sacrifice fly and Polizzi infield single to cap the scoring.

That was plenty for Brown, who improved to 7-2 after 7.2 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on 122 pitches.  Reliever Bryce Shea was just as effective in his 1.1 innings, retiring all four batters he faced including a strikeout.

Polizzi led the Toros with three hits, with Conlan and Avena belting two apiece.

The two teams conclude the regular season with a Saturday doubleheader, with first pitch of game one set to begin at 12 noon.

Prior to the game, the Toros will honor their eight seniors who will play their final games at Toro Field.  Both games will be audio streamed live on the Toro Sports Network, with veteran play-by-play announcer David Smock calling all the action.
