Lavendier Throws Career Game in Opener as Toros Post Two Shutouts on Senior Day

CSUDH advances to next week's CCAA tourney for first time since 2010

CARSON -- In the final start of his career in Toro Field, senior Winston Lavendier made it a memorable "Senior Day" as he pitched a career game in a 1-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino to kick off the day's twinbill, fanning a career-high 10 Coyotes without issuing a walk as the Toros clinched the fourth and final bid in next week's CCAA Tournament.

Junior Albert Flores then followed suit with 4.2 shutout innings of his own as CSUDH took a 5-0 nightcap to give the Toros their first-ever four-game sweep of the Coyotes in the history of the baseball program.

CSUDH enters the CCAA Tournament with a 28-22 record, with its opponent and time still to be determined, pending the conclusion of the regular season tomorrow.

"Qualifying for the CCAA Tournament is a tribute to the leadership of the seniors, whose hard work to get better as players and as a team brought us to this point," begins interim head coach George Wing.

"I feel we are peaking at the right time and truly believe we can contend for the conference title."

After the first two games saw the Toros score 25 runs and belt 27 hits, CSUDH managed just six hits in the contest, but one of those came off the bat of Brady Conlan, who doubled with runners on first and second in the fifth, bringing home Spencer Maxey, who was plunked to lead off the inning and stole second base.

That was plenty for Lavendier, who allowed just one runner to reach third on a stolen base while limiting the Coyotes to just eight singles.  Lavendier also helped himself defensively by picking off a pair of runners, including one in the ninth with one out.  The southpaw grew stronger as the game progressed en route to his 114 net pitches, with 83 going for strikes.

CSUDH also earned a bit of inspiration with today's honorary first pitch, courtesy of long-time batboy Phil "The Thrill" Reinhardt, whose legacy includes being inducted in the Special Olympics Hall of Fame.

In the nightcap, Danny Matienzo led of the scoring with a 2RBI double to left center in the second, which Conlan followed one inning later on a double down the left field line to plate Kamran Young, who reached on an error by CSUSB's center fielder.

Juan Avena then brought  home Conlan with a seeing-eye single that scooted between the first and second basemen, with a Kevin Lugo sacrifice fly in the fifth capping the scoring.  Flores not only helped himself on the hill by scatter just three hits, but also with his glove in the second as he bare-handed a one-out bouncer to his right, wheeled and threw off balance to nab a runner trying to score from third with the game scoreless.

Bryce Shea held the game for senior Kevin Lenik, who tossed the final 1.2 innings of work in the win.

Avena finished with three hits, with Lenik and Matienzo knocking two each as CSUDH won its fourth-straight game.

Prior to the contest, the Toros honored eight seniors playing in their final contests at Toro Field in Juan Avena, Kevin Brown, Joshua Flores, Fernando Gallegos, Winston Lavendier, Kevin Lenik, Danny Matienzo and Kamran Young.
