Miscues Costly in 4-2 Loss to Point Loma

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills committed four errors against visiting Point Loma in a non-conference contest today on Toro Field, and that pushed the Sea Lions over the hump in a 4-2 decision to drop the Toros to 17-17 on the year.

Brandon Polizzi went 3-for-5 with a run scored in the loss.

Point Loma was the beneficiary of four Toro errors in the first four innings, cashing in with two runs for a 2-0 lead.

That edge doubled in the fifth as three hits brought in two more runs, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead after five.

Despite the Toros getting five hits over the first seven frames, that's where the score remained until the eighth the hosts strung together four hits to put their first runs across the board, with Fernando Gallegos bringing home Adrian Guzman, followed by a Kamran Young sacrifice fly that brought home Polizzi with one out.

PLNU then brought in its closer in Coleman Huntley III, who fanned Johnny Palmer and Kevin Lenik to put a halt to CSUDH's rally.

The Toros look to forge one final rally in the bottom of the ninth after pinch-hitter Jesse Oropeza was plunked to start the frame, with pinch runner Anthony Rodriguez moving to second on a Sea Lion infield error to put runners on first and second with one out.

After Polizzi reached base on a fielder's choice, a surprise bunt by Spencer Maxey was fielded cleanly by Huntley, who threw to first base for the game's final out.

The Toros went through seven pitchers in the non-conference contest, with Winston Lavendier getting tagged with the loss in a 43-pitch first inning that resulted in just a single run.

Gallegos added two hits in the setback, with Brady Conlan, Palmer, Joshua Flores and Adrian Guzman earning a hit each.

CSUDH resumes CCAA play this weekend at Chico State, with game one of the four-game set on Friday.
