Gulbrandsen Belts First-Career Homerun As No. 17 Jacks Earn 3-2 (8) and 4-1 Sweep

ARCATA -- If you're a Cal State Dominguez Hills softball fan, you'll most likely agree that the phrase "walk-off" should be banned from all sport lexicon after No. 17 Humboldt State walked off with its third walk-off win in as many games, this time courtesy of a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 3-2 Jack win to open today's twinbill.

Fourth-year senior Rachel Gulbrandsen clubbed her first career homerun in the opener before the Jacks took a 4-1 win in the nightcap to sweep the day and the series, dropping the Toros to 19-19, 12-12 CCAA, with just 12 league games left in the regular season.

The Jacks took a quick 2-0 lead in the opener with a pair of RBI baseknocks in the third inning of play.

That's where the score stood heading into the fifth, when Gulbrandsen unloaded on the first pitch she saw from HSU starter Madison Williams, and sent it high and well over the left field fence to cut CSUDH's deficit in half.

Jazmyne Cortinas followed her teammate's lead an inning later, belting her own shot to left to tie the game at 2-2.

The Toro offense, however, sputtered after that, going in order in both the seventh and eighth innings to give the hosts a chance at their third walk-off win in as many games.

Madison Murphy led the Toros with two hits of the team's seven, with starter Jamie Duran taking the loss after allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

The nightcap again saw the hosts take an early lead, before the Toros tied it in the third on a Carly Mitchell RBI single in the third to plate Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez.

HSU, however, answered right back with a run in the third, before adding an insurance run in the fourth on a solo blast.

That was enough for HSU starter Katie Obbema, who picked up her third win in the series as she allowed just six hits total, with Mitchell earning two of them.

Freshman Alyssa Valinches took the complete-game loss, allowing six hits and all four runs while fanning three.

CSUDH continues its CCAA roadtrip next week, taking on Cal State East Bay for a four-game set the weekend of April 10-11.
