Duran's Gem and Murphy's Bat Lead Toros to 2-0, 6-1 Sweep at CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Sophomore Madison Murphy (pictured) went yard twice in a 6-1 nightcap win at Cal State East Bay after junior southpaw Jamie Duran tossed a 3-hit, complete-game gem in a 2-0 opening game decision to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to a Friday afternoon sweep.

The Toros now sit at 21-19, 14-12 CCAA, and are just half a game behind CS San Bernardino for fourth place in the league standings with 10 games left in the regular season.

The opener was scoreless until the top of the fourth when CSUDH pushed across the game's first run on an Analisa Nicholson RBI single up the box to score Carly Mitchell, who began the frame with a double down the left field line.

CSUDH doubled its lead two innings later after Nicholson lined a one-out double to center, and scored two batters later on a Pioneer infield error.

That was plenty for Duran who cruised to her 10th win on the year, fanning four against just one walk.  Duran made 96 pitches in the win, facing just six batters over the minimum 21 for a 7.0 inning contest.

Stephanie Hua also added two hits in the win.

Murphy got the scoring started early in the nightcap with a solo shot to dead center on a 3-0 pitch to lead off the game, before a Hua RBI single that plated Mitchell, who doubled after Murphy's blast.

The sweet-swinging sophomore came up again in the next inning after Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez and Rachel Gulbrandsen laced one-out hits, and greeted relief pitcher Jordan Abel by clubbing a 3-2 count over the center field fence for a 5-0 lead.

After Jazmyne Cortinas made the score 6-0 with a solo shot in the third, Murphy had a chance to go A-Gone in the fourth with her third home run, but instead lined a single to right field for her third hit of the game.

The Pios finally got to Toro starter Alyssa Valinces in the bottom of the seventh with a run, but it was too little, too late as the true freshman also earned her 10th win of the year after scattering five hits and fanning five, also facing 27 batters in the victory.

Mitchell and Hua added multi-hit efforts as part of CSUDH's 10-hit effort, which was aided by three miscues by the hosts.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11 am on the Pioneer Softball Field.
