Toros Drop Series at Monterey Bay After 8-4 Finale

SEASIDE -- Looking to capitalize on momentum from last night's nightcap win, Cal State Dominguez Hills came up on the wrong end of an 8-4 decision in the series finale at Cal State Monterey Bay, and now trails Cal State L.A. by three games in the CCAA standings with just four games left in the regular season and the top four teams qualifying for the league tournament.

Fernando Gallegos picked up three hits in the defeat which drops the Toros to 24-22, 18-18 CCAA.

The Toros next face Cal State San Bernardino in a home-and-away series needing to win at least 3 games in the series, and hope that UC San Diego sweeps fourth-place Cal State L.A. next weekend.

If the Toros and Golden Eagles end the regular season tied, CSUDH will earn the fourth seed based on winning three of four from CSULA earlier this year in head to head competition.

In today's game, the Otters jumped on Toro starter Jeffrey Gogue with three in the first inning, before CSUDH returned the favor with four runs in its second inning at-bat, with RBI knocks from Adrian Guzman, Brandon Polizzi and Gallegos, with the fourth run coming on what was ruled a three-base error by the Otter centerfielder on a deep drive by Kamran Young to plate Gallegos.

CSUMB answered with single runs in the third and fourth, chasing Gogue in the process, and adding three more runs in the eighth on three hits.

That was plenty for Otter reliver Kory Groves, who earned the win with 7.1 innings of work out of the pen, fanning seven against just one walk.

Young and Lenik added two hits each in the loss, setting up a must-win weekend against the Yotes as the Toros look to qualify for the CCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010.
