Wildcats End Toros CCAA Postseason Hopes in 7-1 and 10-6 Sweep

CARSON -- With Cal State Dominguez Hills needing to win at least three games this weekend against visiting Chico State to have a chance of qualifying for the CCAA Tournament next weekend, the Wildcats ended any hope of postseason play for Cal State Dominguez Hills after taking 7-1 and 10-6 decisions.

Senior Kaci McGinnis, Analisa Nicholson and Alexandra Mootry went all went yard today as the Toros dropped to 23-27, 16-18 CCAA.

The senior outfielder gave the hosts an early lead, turning on an offering from Haley Gilham and depositing it over the left-center field fence to lead off the second inning.

After three relatively easy innings in the circle, Toro starter Jamie Duran ran into trouble in the fourth as the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out, but a pair of force plays kept CSUC off the board.

In the fifth, however, the Toros' luck would run out at Chico loaded the bases again, and finally scored on an RBI single, with CSUDH escaping further damage after an unorthodoxed inning-ending double play that saw a force at home followed by a force at third.

That would be the extent of CSUDH's good fortune as the Wildcats opened the game up in the seventh after a Toro error began the frame.

Three consecutive singles followed to bring home a run before a sacrifice fly preceded a 3-run shot by Desiree' Gonzalez to break the game open in the eventual 7-1 Wildcat win.

McGinnis, Alexandra Mootry and Carly Mitchell each belted two hits in the game.

The Wildcats kept their momentum going in game two as they took a 4-0 lead after two trips to the plate, only to have the Toros answer with a pair of home runs to cut their deficit to 4-3 after Nicholson led off the frame with a blast, and Mootry followed suit after McGinnis reached base.

Chico State, however, got those three runs back in its next at-bat to take a 7-3 advantage.

CSUDH answered again in the fifth as Nicholson and Jasmine Ruiz bases-loaded walks sandwiched a McGinnis RBI base hit.

The visitors, however, answered back with the game's final three runs to eliminate the Toros from postseason contention.

Nicholson, McGinnis and Mootry each knocked two hits, with Nicholson and Mootry driving home two runs apiece.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am, after honoring eight seniors in a pregame ceremony.
