Wildcats Spoil Toro Senior Day After 6-2 and 11-10 Sweep as Season Ends

CARSON -- Visiting Chico State rolled to a 6-2 opening game win before staving off a fierce Cal State Dominguez Hills rally in an 11-10 nightcap win to sweep today's twinbill, spoiling Senior Day festivities on a cool and wet Saturday afternoon in the last games of the 2015 season on Toro Diamond.

Senior Alyssa Cruz Fernanded and junior Jasmine Ruiz enjoyed monster days at the plate in the nightcap as they combined to go 5-for-9 with 8 RBI, 2 doubles and 2 runs scored as CSUDH bade farwell to eight seniors in a pregame ceremony.

The Toros end their 2015 season at 23-29, 16-20 CCAA.

In a back and forth nightcap, the Wildcats scored the first three runs before CSUDH took its first lead of the day in the second, with a Cruz-Fernandez RBI single and 2RBI double by Ruiz providing the big blows, with another Ruiz 2RBI double two innings later giving the Toros a 6-3 lead.

As they have all weekend, however, the Wildcats answered right back, scoring eight unanswered to take a commanding 11-6 lead, and the proverbial wind from CSUDH's sail.

But Cruz-Fernandez made Chico work after beling a 3-run shot to dead center in the bottom of the sixth to bring the Toros to within two, with Carly Mitchell drawing a bases-loaded freebie with two out to get CSUDH to within one, and allowing Ruiz to enjoy one final at-bat.

Ruiz connected with a hard shot to the opposite field, but Chico's right fielder ran the ball down and secured it for the final out.

Ruiz and Cruz-Fernandez each drove home four runs, with Mitchell drawing four base on balls to come within one walk of tying the all-time CSUDH single-game record for free passes.

Priscilla Cardona also notched two hits earning a start, scoring twice in the process.

The opener saw the Wildcats take a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the first, before pushing across four runs in the third with the big blow coming on a 2-run bomb by Courtney Brown, adding another in the sixth for a 6-0 cushion through six.

Chico starter Haley Gilman, meanwhile, limited the Toros to just a Kaci McGinnis single through six innings, before the Toros finally got on the board.

McGinnis started the really with a lead-off single, before an Analisa Nicholson walk and Stephanie Hua single loaded the bases with none out.

Alexandra Mootry reached on a fielding error to bring home and run, with pinch-runner Kara Balagey scoring on a Jasmine Ruiz groundout.

Gilman then buckled down to retire the next two batters for the final outs as the Wildcats took a 6-2 win.

Prior to the opener, the Toros honored their eight seniors playing in their final games on Toro Diamond in Priscilla Cardona, Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez, Rachel Gulbrandsen, Stephanie Hua, Kaci McGinnis, Carly Mitchell, Alexandra Mootry and Alicia Paiz.
