No. 17 Humboldt Squeezes Two Wins Out of Toros in 6-5 (9) and 3-2 Decisions

ARCATA -- In a game that featured two home runs by each team, a suicide squeeze by host and 17th-ranked Humboldt State in the bottom of the ninth inning proved the difference as the Lumberjacks took game one of today's twinbill by a 6-5 count, with HSU utilizing another squeeze to take another walk-off in the nightcap, a 3-2 decision in the bottom of the seventh.

Stephanie Hua (pictured) and Carly Mitchell went yard for the Toros in the opener, with Hua driving in two and Mitchell scoring two in the setback.

After the hosts struck first with a pair of runs in their second at-bat that was started by a Toro error, CSUDH answered with three in the third to take a 3-2 lead, with Mitchell starting the scoring surge with a solo blast to left center to lead off the frame.

One batter later, Madison Murphy doubled to left center, moved to third on a Jack error, and scored when Jasmine Ruiz was thrown out at second base trying to steal.

That score preceded a towering shot to dead center by Hua to complete the inning's scoring, only to have HSU answer with two on a 2-run shot in the third to retake the lead at 4-3.

A leadoff home run to start the fifth brought HSU's lead to 5-3, setting up the fantastic finish.

In the seventh, Mitchell started the rally with a leadoff double, with pinch-hitter Alexis Viramontes drawing a walk to put runners at first and second.  Murphy then drew a walk to load the bases, with Mitchell scoring on a ground out one batter later to cut HSU's lead to just one.

A Hua RBI single one batter later tied the game at 5-5, prompting a pitching change that put an end to the Toro rally after Katie Obemma induced a foul out and strikeout to end the threat.

The Jacks capitalized in the ninth after a leadoff single and error put the leadoff hitter on second with none out.  After a sacrifice moved the runner over, a bunt to first base followed, with Mootry's toss to catcher Hua coming late to give HSU the walk-off.

Hua and Mitchell led the Toros with two hits apiece as part of seven total, with Hua driving in two in the loss.

The Jacks continued their momentum in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning of play.

CSUDH, however, used a pair of doubles by Murphy and Hua in the third to cut its deficit in half, eventually tying the contest in the fifth after Rachel Gulbrandsen reached on a one-out error, was moved to third on Murphy's second double of the game, and scored on an RBI single by Ruiz.

Unfortunately for the Toros, the Jacks struck back in the seventh with a leadoff double, a sacrifice to move the runner over, and another perfectly executed but to Mootry, whose throw home was a split second too late.

Murphy went 3-for-4 in the nighitcap, with Kaci McGinnis and Mootry each roping two hits.

Now 19-17, CSUDH completes its four-game set at HSU tomorrow, with first pitch of game one set for 1 pm.
