Cortinas Goes Yard Twice to Highlight Sweep of Coyotes

CARSON -- Sophomore Jazmyne Cortinas belted two home runs as part of three total for Cal State Dominguez Hills as the Toros took a 6-2 win to open Saturday's twinbill, before seniors Kaci McGinnis and Rachel Gulbrandsen each roped two hits and drove home two in the nightcap to cement CSUDH's 9-6 nightcap win for the sweep.

The victories gave the Toros a regular season series against CSUSB after the visitors took both games yesterday, and brings CSUDH to sixth place in the CCAA with just four games left in the regular season.

Currently at 16-16 CCAA, the Toros will need to win at least three games against next week's opponent in Chico State (17-15) to pass the Wildcats in the standings, and hope that UC San Diego takes three from CS San Bernardino (17-14) in La Jolla to conclude the regular season.

After a disappointing Friday, the Toros came out on fire today, thanks to Cortinas' big bat.

The team leader in home runs added to her total, belting a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the first, before starting a four-run rally in the third with another solo shot.

Analisa Nicholson also flexed her power stroke, blasting a three-run job to give starter Jamie Duran a 5-0 lead, before Carly Mitchell slapped a single through the left side to plate Gulbrandsen for a 6-0 lead after four.

CSUSB made it interesting with a pair of runs in the fifth after a Thalia Ortiz 2-run jack, but that was the extent of the Yote offense in game one as CSUDH took a 6-2 lead.

The Toros pounded 10 hits in the win as Duran earned her 11th victory of the year.

The nightcap saw the visitors take a 2-0 lead after their first three at-bats, before Jasmine Ruiz drew a bases-loaded walk to get the hosts on the board in the third, a harbinger of things to come.

That harbinger came in a big way one inning later as the Toros plated six, the big blows coming on a RBI singles by Mitchell, Alexandra Mootry, Gulbrandsen, a 2RBI knock by McGinnis and a Yote error to put CSUDH up 7-2.

CSUSB mounted its own rally with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the Toros answered with single runs in each frame to keep the Coyotes at arm's length.

Cortinas and Stephanie Hua each drew a pair of walks as the Toros tallied seven in the game, compared to just three Ks.

Alyssa Valinches went the distance to pick up her 11th win, fanning two batters.

In between games, CSUDH recognized its softball alums who came en masse to support their program to a Saturday sweep.
