Complete Game Gems Push Toros to 6-2 and 2-1 Sweep of Seawolves

CARSON -- After senior pitcher Kevin Brown's 120th pitch of today's opening game against Sonoma State cemented a herculean effort in a 6-2 opening game win, junior TyRay Gatewood's 96th pitch did the same as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept today's twinbill after the Toros took a 2-1 decision in the nightcap.

CSUDH improves to 16-15 on the year, just 1.5 games back of Cal State L.A. for the fourth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament, with nine games left in the regular season.

An RBI single in the first inning gave Sonoma a quick lead, one that lasted until the sixth inning when Brady Conlan unloaded on SSU starter DeVon Golden with a blast over the left field fence, also bringing home Kamran Young for a 2-1 Toro lead.

Hot-hitting Fernando Gallegos, who went a perfect 5-for-5 in yesterday's win, then singled home a pair in the seventh as part of a 4-run inning, with Young driving in the final two on an opposite field double.

A SSU run in the eighth proved too little, too late as Brown scattered six hits and fanned seven in the win, moving him to 5-2 on the year.

The 7-inning nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duel between Gatewood and SSU starter Ryan Luna.

Conlan again provide the offense early with an RBI double to center to bring home the speedy Brandon Polizzi from second, before SSU tied the game in the fourth.

The contest looked to be heading towards extras until the sixth when Young began a rally with a leadoff single.  After advancing to second on a failed pick-off attempt, his hustle to third on a fly out to center field proved huge as Kevin Lenik brought him home on a sacrifice fly for the eventual game-winner.

Gatewood scatterd six hits while fanning four in improving to 2-1 on the year, with Polizzi, Young and Conlan notching the team's lone hits in the nightcap.

The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for an 11 am start on Toro Field.  The game will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network.
