Coyotes Put Damper on CCAA Hopes After 8-0 and 8-5 Sweep of Toros

CARSON -- Former Cal State Dominguez Hills head coach Jim Maier made his return to Toro Diamond a successful one as his new team, Cal State San Bernardino, handed the Toros an 8-0 loss to open today's key CCAA twinbill before surviving an 8-5 victory in the nightcap to sweep the double-dip.

Kaci McGinnis went 3-for-4 in the nightcap as the Toros slipped into a two-way tie for sixth place in league play, 3.5 games behind the fourth-place Coyotes with just six games left in the regular season.

The Yotes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI triple and Mary Menicucci 2-run home run.

CSUSB added three more in the sixth on a 3-run blast by Kaylee Gemmell, adding a Cassandra Williams 2-run home run in the seventh to complete the scoring.

CSUDH managed just two hits in the game, with Jamie Duran to 10-10 on the year in the loss as the Toros extended their scoreless drought to 19 innings after being blanked in their last doubleheader against No. 17 Cal Baptist earlier this week.

The nightcap saw the Toros finally get on a board in the first on a fielding error by the Yotes, adding another on the first of three hits by McGinnis.

After CSUSB retook the lead in the third, Stephanie Hua drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run, tying the game at 3-3 after two innings.

The visitors took the lead again in the fifth on a 2RBI triple and illegal pitch, before the Toros replied on a Jasmine Ruiz RBI double to score Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez, before Ruiz scored on a passed ball to give CSUDH momentum for the final two innings.

That momentum was short-lived as the Yotes added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Analisa Nicholson and Ruiz added a pair of hits each, with just three of the runs being earned on the day.

Prior to the contest, Ivy Campbell, Rachel Gulbrandsen, Stephanie Hua, Carly Mitchell, Alexandra Mootry and Alexis Viramontes were presented certificates by Academic Advisor Meghan McGarry for being recognized on National Student-Athlete Day for their minimum 3.0 GPA and active community service involvement.

The two teams complete their four-game set tomorrow at 12 noon, with the Toros facing a pair of must-win games and needing help from others to make a final push towards the CCAA postseason.
