Gallegos Goes 5-for-5 as Toros Take Opener Over Seawolves

CARSON -- Senior Fernando Gallegos (pictured) went 5-for-5 as Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 14 hits en route to a 10-7 win over Sonoma State to kick off the CCAA four-game set, with Winston Lavendier earning the win after 6.0 innings of work and 131 pitches.

Now at 14-15 in the CCAA, the Toros now sit in a 3-way tie for fifth place in league play with Sonoma State and San Francisco State, 3.5 game behind fourth-place Cal State L.A. with just 11 games left in the regular season.

After the visitors took an early 1-0 lead in the first, the Toros answered with three runs in the first and two in the second, with Gallegos' RBI single in the second providing a scary moment as his shot richocheted off SSU starting pitcher Haydon Turpin's shin, dropping him to the mound for a few minutes.

Turpin showed his mettle, however, shaking off the comebacker and completing the inning en route to allowing five runs in eventually taking the loss.

SSU regrouped with three in the third before Juan Avena sent a blast over the right field wall for his second home run of the game for a 6-4 Toro lead.

After the Seawolves cut their deficit to 6-5 on an RBI single in the sixth, CSUDH answered with four in the sixth, the big blow coming on a 2RBI double to left center by Brady Conlan with the bases juiced.

Subsequent RBI singles by Kevin Lenik and Avena brought CSUDH's lead to 10-5, giving the Toro pen a cushion.

Those extra runs proved instrumental as the Seawolves scored twice in the eighth, with one coming on a sacrifice fly to the wall in right field that plated a runner from second base.

Those two runs would be too little, too late, however, as Lenik tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.

Gallegos was one hit away from tying the CSUDH all-time record for hits in a game, set in 2002 by Toro icon Joe Gevas.

Avena finished with three hits and Kamran Young and Conlan with two each in the win as the two teams combined for 30 hits in the contest.

Prior to the contest, Adam Cienfuegos, Conlan, Daryl Donerson, Albert Flores, Joshua Flores, Jared Foshe, Gary Hercules, Ryan King, Kevin Lugo, Danny Matienzo, Trevor North, Brian Nostaja, Jesse Oropeza, Johnny Palmer, Brandon Polizzi, Bryce Shea and Young were presented certificates by Compliance Coordinator Natalie Lockhart and Academic Advisor Meghan McGarry for being recognized on National Student-Athlete Day for their minimum 3.0 GPA and active community service involvement.
