No. 17 Cal Baptist Hands Toros 5-0 and 11-0 (5) Losses in Tuesday Twinbill

CARSON -- Redshirt sophomore Jazmyne Cortinas enjoyed a 3-for-4 performance at the dish in game one, but No. 17 Cal Baptist held Cal State Dominguez Hills to just two other hits en route to a 5-0 Lancer win to open a rare Tuesday double dip at Toro Diamond, before rolling to an 11-0 win in 5 innings in the nightcap.

The Toros fall to 21-23 overall, with just eight CCAA games left in the regular season.

Cal Baptist struck first in the first, sending eight batters to the plate off Toro starter Alyssa Valinches to plate two, who didn't help herself with a fielding error.

The Lancers could've opened up a huge lead by loading the bases with none out, but Valinches fanned the next two batters swinging and then induced a grounder to second to escape further damage.

CSUDH looked to capitalize in the bottom of the first after Cortinas belted the first of her three hits to lead off, with consecutive errors by the Lancer third baseman loading the bases with one out, but CBU starter Loie Kesterson fanned the next two batters to escape unscathed.

That's where the score remained until the fourth when CBU added a pair of runs on an RBI double and sacrifice fly, before a solo shot in the sixth accounted for the final scoring in the 5-0 contest.

It was more of the same in the nightcap as CBU took a 5-0 lead after two innings of play off Toro starter Alicia Paiz.

That's where the score remained until the sixth when the Lancers scored six, with the big blow coming on a controversial grand slam by Jordan Mowatt, who pulled the ball in front of the right field foul pole and out of play, only to have the home plate umpire call it fair and gone.

The Toros managed just three hits in the loss, coming from Cortinas, Kaci McGinnis and Rachel Gulbrandsen.

CSUDH will resume CCAA play this weekend as Cal State San Bernardino visits Toro Diamond, starting with a Friday twinbill set for 1 pm.
