Wildcats Even Series in 8-5 Win in Finale

CHICO -- A quintet of Cal State Dominguez Hills pitchers allowed 14 hits to Chico State batters, including 3 to Cameron Santos en route to 5 RBI, as the Wildcats took an 8-5 win in Sunday's finale, salvaging a split in the four-game series.

Kamran Young (pictured) and Brady Conlan led the Toros with a double and two hits apiece in the loss as CSUDH falls to 19-19, 13-15 CCAA.

The Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead after two innings of play, before a Daryl Donerson RBI double, Fernando Gallegos RBI single, Kamran Young sacrifice fly and Chico error brought four runs across for the Toros in the top of the third inning.

CSUC knotted the game in the fifth inning, and took the lead for good one inning later before adding three in the seventh to take a commanding 8-4 lead.

That lead could have been more save for a defensive gem by Gallegos, who fielded a sacrifice bunt attempt with none out and runners at first and second, bare handing the bunt from the pitcher's position and throwing across his body to get the lead runner heading towards third.

The Toros used that momentum to get a run back on a Brady Conlan RBI double in the eighth, but it was too little, too late in the 8-5 loss.

All eight position players earned a hit, with Gallegos, Young, Lenik and Donerson notching an extra base knock as part of 11 hits on the day, but CSUDH committed three errors that allowed two unearned runs to score.

The Toros host Sonoma State next weekend for a crucial league match-up, looking to move up the CCAA standings towards one of four berths in the upcoming CCAA Tournament.
