Pioneers Roll to 12-4 and 5-1 Saturday Sweep Over Toros

HAYWARD -- Oh, what a difference 24 hours make.  One day after Cal State Dominguez Hills swept past host Cal State East Bay, the Pioneers returned the favor this afternoon with their 12-4 (5) and 5-1 wins to split the regular season series, dropping the Toros to 21-21 overall, and 14-14 CCAA, good for sixth in the league standings with eight CCAA games left in the regular season.

The Pioneers took it to the Toros early in the opener, scoring four runs in the first three innings of play before breaking the game wide open with eight in the fourth.

CSUDH made it respectable with four in the fifth inning, with Carly Mitchell providing the big blow with a 2RBI single, with a Pio error and RBI by Analisa Nicholson completing the scoring, but CSUEB smacked five home runs en route to 15 hits in the game off Toro starter Jamie Duran and reliever Alicia Paiz in the blowout.

The Toros took a early lead in the nightcap behind an EB wild pitch that plated Jazmyne Cortinas, but the Pios answered back with single runs in their first three at-bats, before a pair of runs in the fourth put the game away off Alyssa Valinches.

Cortinas and Stephanie Hua both smacked a pair of hits in the loss while Ali Cerminara led all players with three hits, including a home run in the third.

CSUDH returns home next weekend to host Cal Baptist on Tuesday for a non-conference contest, before Cal State San Bernardino and former head coach Jim Maier pay Carson a visit next weekend.
