Toros Sweep Twinbill After 5-4 (10) and 6-1 Decisions

CHICO -- Senior Fernando Gallegos (pictured) earned a win and a save today as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept host Chico State by 5-4 (10) and 6-1 counts, with Kevin Lenik going 3-for-4 in the opener and Brady Conlan enjoying a 4-for-4 effort in the nightcap.

The game one win marked the first time since April 2, 2011, that the Toros have been on the winning side against Chico State, snapping a 14-game losing streak.  Additionally, the sweep marks the first time since the 2010 season that the Toros have swept a doubleheader against the Wildcats, with tomorrow's finale giving CSUDH the opportunity to win a regular season series against CSUC for the first time since 2010, when the Toros won three of four.

The Wildcats, who are in the midst of a non-Chico State season sitting four games below .500 in league play, continued their momentum from yesterday's 7-0 shutout win by taking a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

Unlike yesterday, however, the Toros rallied off the Wildcat rotation, touching Chico starter AJ Epstein for two runs in the fourth on a Danny Matienzo double to left center that plated Gallegos and Lenik with CSUDH's first runs of the series.

CSUDH earned its first lead of the game two innings later on a Spencer Maxey RBI groundout and Adrian Guzman RBI single, before the hosts tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a solo blast.

That's where the score remained until the 10th when Brady Conlan led off with a single to left field, and came home on Lenik's booming double to the gap in left center.

Gallegos ran into trouble in the 10th after allowing a one-out single, but induced Connor Huesers to ground into a game-ending double play to earn the win.

Gallegos tossed 4.0 innings and scattered three hits, after starter Kevin Brown threw 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts against just one walk.

Brandon Polizzi and Daniel Matienzo also earned multi-hit efforts with two each as CSUDH snapped its three-year string of defeats.

Junior TyRay Gatewood earned the start in game two, and kept the Wildcat bats off balance by allowing just two hits over the first 5.0 innings of play.

Kamran Young got Gatewood's first start as a Toro off on the right foot with a solo blast in the first, with Lenik drawing a bases loaded walk in the third and Conlan doubling home a run in the fifth, before Young scored on a balk with Conlan following him home on a sacrifice fly to give CSUDH a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats strung together a rally in the 6th with the help of a Toro error, hit batter and single to chase Gatewood, finally scoring on a fielder's choice with the bases full.

That would be the extent of the scoring as Gallegos fanned the next batter he faced and induced a fly out to end the threat and leave three on base, before escaping from a two-on, one-out jam in the 7th for his first save of the year, fanning the final two batters he faced.

Polizzi and Young enjoyed two hits each in the win, with Young and Lenik driving home two runs each.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am, with the Toros just four games back of the fourth and final berth in the upcoming CCAA tournament, with 13 league games left in the regular season, including eight against two of the teams ahead of them in the standings.
