Offense Comes Through in 5-2 and 10-3 Wins Over Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Needing to forge a comeback win, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros did just that as they scored a run in the 6th to tie and three in the 7th to put the game away en route to a 5-2 win at San Francisco State in game one of today's twinbill, before hammering 13 hits in a 10-3 nightcap win to sweep the hosts.

Carly Mitchell went 5-for-6 with 4 runs scored in the wins as CSUDH improves to 8-9, 6-4 CCAA win the wins, the team's fourth and fifth straight.

Junior pitcher Jamie Duran was the story early, as the southpaw flirted with a no-hitter through the first three innings until SFSU spoiled that bid, as well as a shutout offering with a 2-run blast to give the hosts a 2-1 lead after 4.0 innings.

That's where the score remained until pinch-hitter Stephanie Hua launched a solo homer to right center, spurring a surge that continued to the next inning as an Analisa Nicholson RBI double, Jazmyne Cortinas RBI double and Jasmine Ruiz RBI single closed the scoring, and the game.

Duran earned the win with a complete-game 5-hitter, fanning three Gators in the process.

The Toros continued their offense in the nightcap, staking starter Alyssa Valinches to a 3-0 lead as Hua provided the big blow with a 2-RBI single in the 1st inning.

After SFSU earned two back, CSUDH scored twice both in the 3rd and 4th frames to regain the lead, with Cortinas opening the deluge with a solo shot, and then relying on the Gator defense for the 4th inning scoring as two unearned runs crossed the plate.

SFSU rallied with a single run in the bottom of the 4th, but the Toros answered with three in the 6th to put the game away, with Ruiz, Rachel Gulbrandsen and Mitchell bringing home the three runs.

Valinces earned the complete-game win with nine strikeouts, with three runs scored and two walks allowed.

Hua went a perfect 4-for-4 and Mitchell 3-for-3 in the nightcap as CSUDH picked up the Friday sweep.

The two teams conclude the four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one's doubleheader set for 11 am on the SFSU Softball Field.
