Toros Lead Series After 6-4 and 8-0 Wins to Sweep Afternoon at Cal State L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- Six seems to be the magic number for cross-town rivals Cal State L.A. and Cal State Domiguez Hills after the Toros evened this four-game set at one game each as CSUDH took a 6-4 win over CSULA in game one of today's twinbill, tallying the same amount of runs Cal State L.A. used in yesterday's series opening win, before the Toros swept the afternoon with an 8-0 shutout win behind a masterful effort by senior Kevin Brown.

The Toros improve to 11-8, 6-5 CCAA.

Brown continued his stellar comeback in the nightcap, limiting the Golden Eagles to just four hits in the complete-game win.  He retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced, with CSULA putting two runners on base in the final two innings, to no avail.

He was helped offensively by Kevin Lenik and Brandon Polizzi, who combined to go 6-for-8, with Lenik belting his team-leading fourth home run of the year.

Seven different Toros drove in one run each, with Kamran Young also belting two hits as part of three CSUDH batters who enjoyed a multi-hit contest.

The opener was a run-fest from the first at-bat as CSUDH plated three to stake starter Winston Lavendier to a 3-0 lead, using RBI singles by Brady Conlan and Fernando Gallegos as well as an RBI groundout for the scores.

The score was tied at 4-4 after four when Daryl Donerson broke the deadlock with a single to center to plate Lenik, before a Young triple in the 9th brought home Adrian Guzman for an insurance run.

Phenom TyRay Gatewood tossed the final three innings to pick up his second save of the year, with Lavendier earning his fourth win (4-1).

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow afternoon in Carson, with first pitch slated for a 2 pm start.  The game will be streamed here on the Toro Sports Network, courtesy of play-by-play announcer David Smock.
