Toros Take 4-3 Heart-Stopper at No. 19 Azusa Pacific

AZUSA -- Coming off a disappointing series loss to No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona, pitching and power led Cal State Dominguez Hills to a heart-stopping 4-3 win over No. 19 Azusa Pacific after a pair of solo shots and a combined nine strikeouts against just one walk from its pitching staff.

Fernando Gallegos earned the win in relief while Danny Matienzo (pictured) went 3-for-4 on the day, with Kevin Lenik and Johnny Palmer each belting a solo shot in the victory that moves the Toros to 17-16 overall.  APU, meanwhile, drops just its ninth game of the year in moving to 24-9.

CSUDH got on the board first in the second inning, after Brady Conlan singled to begin the frame and Lenik drew a walk one out later.  After a foul out, Matienzo stroked the first pitch he saw back through the box to score the speedy Conlan from second base.

That's where the game remained until the seventh when Lenik turned on the first pitch he saw in the frame and sent it over the wall for a 2-0 lead.  APU, however, answered with two in its seventh inning at-bat to set up the dramatic finish.

In the ninth, Palmer started the rally with a two-out home run before a Matienzo double and Adrian Guzman single gave CSUDH a two-run cushion.

APU's Blake James made CSUDH's insurance run count after he homered with two out to make it a one-run game, but Gallegos fanned the final batter he faced on four pitches to earn the win.

Toro starter Winston Lavendier threw a solid 6.0 innings of work, cruising before APU tied the game in the sixth, fanning five against no walks.

Conlan finished with two hits as both teams earned 10 hits in the game.

The Toros conclude their non-conference schedule on Tuesday, April 7, hosting Point Loma at 2 pm on Toro Field.
