Toros Claim Platinum Bracket After 3-2 Win Over No. 21 Sonoma State

TURLOCK -- Junior pitcher Jamie Duran threw a complete-game gem at No. 21 Sonoma State in the Platinum Bracket title game at the Tournament of Champions, and her 9-strikeout, 1-walk effort led Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 3-2 win and the Platinum Bracket Title.

Jasmine Ruiz belted a home run in the win en route to being named the lone Toro on the All-Tournament team, with the Toro pitching staff boasting the second-lowest ERA amongst the teams competing.

In the title game, the Seawolves got on the board first with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, where the score stayed until the fourth inning.

That's when true freshman Alexis Viramontes enjoyed the first of her many shining moments as she stepped up as a pinch-hitter with runners on second and third, and laced a 2-1 offering from SSU starter Mayleen Mazon up the middle to give the Toros their first lead of the game.

Ruiz gave the Toros an insurance run with her fifth home run of the year, one that was needed after SSU scored in the bottom of the seventh and threatened with runners on first and second with just one out, until Duran buckled down and fanned the final two Seawolves on seven pitches to give CSUDH the Platinum title.

In the 7-0 win this morning over Simon Fraser that pushed the Toros to the title game, CSUDH pounded out 11 hits with Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez driving home two runs in the win.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Toros scored four times, with two RBI coming on a Clan error.

CSUDH put the game away with three more in the sixth on RBI hits by Analisa Nicholson, Jazmyne Cortinas and Cruz-Fernandez.

That was plenty for starter Alyssa Valinches, who improved to 8-5 with a complete-game win, fanning five batters against zero walks.

The Toros resume CCAA competition this week at Humboldt State, with twinbills set for Thursday and Friday.
