Toros Regroup to Win Two on Day Two of TOC

TURLOCK -- After suffering a morning setback to Azusa Pacific on day two of the Tournament of Champions, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team regrouped to take an extra-inning 4-3 win over Chaminade and an 11-3 blowout over Dominican to close the evening's play.

The Toros move to 17-15 after today's action.

CSUDH faced a 1-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, when freshman Alexis Viramontes began the rally with a two-out pinch-hit single.  After Rachel Gulbrandsen pinch-ran for the freshman, Madison Murphy (pictured) cashed her in with a triple to right center on a full count, knotting the game at 1-1.

After the first extra inning went by scoreless, Chaminade put the pressure on the Toros with two in the ninth, setting up the dramatic finish.

In their final at-bat, the Toros loaded the bases with none out, with the cerebral Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez getting the Toros to within one after taking a pitch off her noggin.

That seemed to rattle Chaminade pitcher Brett Aspel, who proceeded to walk Gulbrandsen to force in the tying run, before Murphy ended the game with a walk-off single to right to score Jasmine Ruiz.

Jamie Duran earned the win after tossing 9.0 innings, scattering nine hits while fanning seven.

Murphy and Ruiz each knocked two hits while four different Toros scored a run in the win.

The final game of the day saw the Toros jump to a 2-0 lead in the first, courtesy of a Ruiz big fly that brought home Murphy, who doubled to lead off the game.

The game turned into a rout two innings later as CSUDH 11 batters to the plate en route to seven runs, with the big blows coming on a Kaci McGinnis 2RBI single. a Jazmyne Cortinas 3-run blast and a Ruiz 2RBI double in her second at-bat of the frame.

Ruiz finished with four RBI and three hits, matched by Stephanie Hua's three baseknocks and two each by Murphy and McGinnis.

Alicia Paiz picked up her first win of the year in the circle, going 5.0 innings while scattering seven hits and just one earned run.

In the opener, APU used a four-run sixth to erase a 2-1 deficit en route to a 7-3 win over the Toros, despite Cortinas belting her then fifth home run of the year.

Six different Toros earned a hit in the loss, with Alyssa Valinches taking the defeat to drop to 8-0 on the year.

CSUDH continues the TOC with bracket play tomorrow in the Platinum Bracket, where they will face Simon Fraser at 9 am.  The winner will meet the winner of Sonoma State/Dominican at 2:30 pm, with the Platinum Bracket Championship at stake.
