Gallegos Grand as Toros Topple No. 18 Broncos to Kick Off Twinbill Before CPP Takes Nightcap

POMONA -- Senior Fernando Gallegos showed how important his value is to the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team as the righty earned the win in relief with 5.0 innings of one-hit ball in the first game of today's doubleheader at No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona, also going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a double as the Toros took a 7-6 decision over the Broncos on a sunny afternoon in Pomona.

Juan Avena added three RBI as CSUDH snapped a two-game skid before CPP returned the favor with a 12-3 decision in the nightcap.

The opener saw the Broncos take a 3-0 lead in the first, before the Toros answered with two in the third, courtesy of a Bronco error and RBI baseknock by Avena.

CPP, however, answered with three more in the fourth on a CSUDH miscue, sacrifice fly and RBI single, looking to put the game out of reach.

The Toros ansewred back behind an RBI groundout by Avena in the fifth, before plating four in the seventh with the big blow coming on a 2-run error, followed by an RBI basehit by Johnny Palmer for the eventual game-winner.

Gallegos also scored twice and fanned three in the decision as the Toros faced four pitchers in the contest.

The nightcap was all CPP as it scored six runs in the first three innings, and added six more in the fifth and sixth in the runaway win, saddling Kevin Brown with the loss.

Adrian Guzman went 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the game as the offensive bright spot, with three other Toros notching one hit each.

CSUDH, now 16-16, 11-13 CCAA, will travel to Azusa Pacific for a Tuesday night tilt, before returning home to host Point Loma on Tuesday, April 7, with first pitch set for a 2 pm start on Toro Field.
