Softball Blanks NDDN in Splitting Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK -- Coming off a heart-breaking loss in its opening game of the Tournament of Champions Tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills answered by blanking Notre Dame de Namur to split day one as Madison Murphy's bat and Alyssa Valinches' (pictured) pitching proved a winning combination.

CSUDH improves to 15-14 with the win, with three games on tap tomorrow.

In the win, the Toros broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the third, started by Murphy's second home run of the year, and followed by Alexandra Mootry's RBI single down the left field line.

That's where the score remained until the sixth when Jasmine Ruiz's hot bat brought home Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez, before Murphy scored her second run of the game on an Argonaut wild pitch.

That was plenty for starter Valinches, who improved to 8-5 on the year after scattering six hits and fanning eight without a walk.

In the opener, Western Washington rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 win over the Toros, with senior Kaci McGinnis lacing a triple to the opposite field as part of a 1-for-3 outing at the plate.

The Vikings scored single runs to take a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, when CSUDH notched its first hit en route to tying the game at 2-2.  In the frame, Jazmyne Cortinas began the rally with a leadoff single, before Jasmine Ruiz brought her home with a double down the left field line.  One batter later, Madison Murphy sent a fly ball to left field to score the speedy Ruiz to knot the contest.

CSUDH took the lead one inning later after Analisa Nicholson laced a one-out single up the middle, and was brought home on McGinnis' booming triple to right.

WWU, however, answered in its final at-bat, loading the bases with none out and cashing in two to take the lead for good.

The Toros had a chance to tie the game in their final at-bat by loading the bases with two out, but Makinlee Sellevold induced a comebacker with a full count to preserve the win, and move WWU to 15-11 on the year.

The Toros continue TOC action against Azusa Pacific tomorrow morning at 8:45 am, followed by a pair of afternoon contests prior to Sunday's bracket play.
