No. 18 Broncos Stifle Toro Offense in 7-2 Win

CARSON -- After scoring 27 runs in the final two games against San Francisco State last weekend, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros were limited to just four hits in a 7-2 loss to No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona in the first game of this weekend's four-game set, with the Broncos belting three home runs on a sunny and hot afternoon in Carson.

Brady Conlan notched two hits for CSUDH in the loss, but the combination of Bronco starter Chris Powell and centerfielder Kyle Garlick was too much to overcome as the Toros slipped to 15-14, 10-11 CCAA.

Garlick started the yardwork by turning on the first pitch he saw from Toro starter Winston Lavendier, and sending it just over the reach of left fielder Daryl Donerson for a 1-0 lead.

Garlick duplicated that effort two innings later with an opposite field shot to right center with a runner on board to give the guests a 3-0 lead.

Another blast, this time by designated hitter Caleb Romo in the fifth, staked Powell to a 5-0 lead as the Toro batters showed little patience at the plate as evidenced by Powell making just 40 pitches in 4.0 innings of work.

In the fifth, CSUDH got on the board with a Kevin Lenik sacrifice fly, a feat repeated an inning later on a Brandon Polizzi out to left field that brought home Donerson to cut CPP's lead to 5-2.

The Broncos, however, answered with single runs in the 7th and 8th to put the game away, taking the first game of the four-game set by a 7-2 count.

Fernando Gallegos and Adrian Guzman tallied the other two hits for the Toros, with Lavendier taking the loss after 6.0 innings of work.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 3 pm on Toro Field.
