Streak Hits Four as Toros Sweep Twinbill and Series From UCSD

CARSON -- Junior pitcher Jamie Duran limited visiting UC San Diego to just three hits while Madison Murphy and Stephanie Hua (pictured) combined for six in game one as Cal State Dominguez Hills stretched its winning streak to four games after 5-2 and 7-6 (8) wins over visiting UC San Diego on a sunny Monday afternoon, giving the Toros a four-game sweep over their southern California rival.

With the wins, the Toros now sit at 14-13, 12-8 CCAA, and in sole possession of 5th place in league play with the Tournament of Champions later this week.

After the Tritons opened the scoring in game one with two in the first, the Toros answered right back with two of their own, courtesy of RBI singles by Hua and Kaci McGinnis.

McGinnis added an insurance run with another RBI baseknock to bring home Hua, before Jazmyne Cortinas launched her fourth home run of the year to deep center in the sixth, and Murphy and Jasmine Ruiz executed a successful double steal of second and home, respectively, to account for the game's final score.

Duran was solid as she fanned a pair of batters in the complete-game win.

The nightcap saw the visitors get on the board again first, as coach Patti Gerckens' gamble to pinch hit in only the second inning with the bases loaded paid huge dividends as Bianca Devoto belted a single to the right-center gap, bringing in all three Triton runners.

UCSD could have had more in the frame, save for a web gem by defensive wizard Carly Mitchell at shortstop, who dove to her right to snatch a soft liner before it hit the ground, wheeled and threw out McKenna Clewett, who led off the frame with a walk.

That's where the score remained until the fifth when the Toros replied with four, the big blow coming on a Cortinas 2RBI double.

Unlike the opener, however, UCSD fought back with three of its own in the top of the sixth on three RBI hits to take a 6-4 lead.

That's when the Cardinal and Gold heart showed up again, as the never-say-die Toros made up a run on an Analisa Nicholson RBI single in the sixth, eventually tying the game with two outs in the seventh on a clutch Murphy liner to right to bring home the speedy Cortinas from second.

After Toro starter Alyssa Valinches retired the Triton side in order in the top of the eighth, CSUDH loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, before Cortinas hit a sharp grounder to third base that allowed pinch-runner Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez to slide home with the game-winner, the second walk-off in as many days.

Nicholson, Alexandra Mootry and Cortinas each belted two hits in the nightcap, with Cortinas pacing the squad with three RBI.

Valinches improved to 5-4 on the year while fanning three batters as the Toros swept the Tritons for the second-straight day.

This sweep also marks the first time since the 2006 season that the Toros have won all four games against
the Tritons, with that 2006 team posting a 46-11 overall and 21-7 league mark en route to toppling No. 1 Humboldt State in the NCAA Regional, before falling to host Cal State Bakersfield.

Prior to the contest, CSUDH President Dr. Willie Hagan tossed the honorary first pitch over for a strike, a harbinger of today's good fortune.
