Offense Erupts in 15-3 Nightcap Win as Toros and Gators Split Twinbill

CARSON -- After dropping the first two contests of the four-game CCAA set against San Francisco State, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros erupted for 15 runs on 16 hits en route to a 15-3 drubbing of the Gators in Saturday's nightcap win.

Kamran Young and Danny Matienzo both pounded three hits in the win, with Young driving in four and slamming his eighth home run of the year as CSUDH improved to 14-13, 9-10 CCAA and snapped a four-game skid.

After the Gators took a 3-1 lead after their 4th-inning at-bat, the Toros answered, and then some, putting up six runs in the 4th to take a 7-3 lead.

The Toros benefited from two bases loaded walks, before Young and Brady Conlan brought home two runs each with baseknocks.

A Brandon Polizzi 2RBI double made the score 9-3 after five, before Young's home run to lead off the 6th opened the offensive floodgates again as a Matienzo double, Jesse Oropeza single, Daryl Donerson triple, wild pitch and Young single all brought home runs in the frame, putting the game well out of reach.

That was plenty for starter Kevin Brown, who improved to a perfect 4-0 on the year, while reliever extraordinaire TyRay Gatewood lowered his ERA to 0.86 with a pair of scoreless innings to close the door on the Gators, and snap CSUDH's four-game skid.

Young drove in four with Polizzi bringing home three in the blowout as every starter knocked a hit en route to a season-high 16 hits.

Game one nearly was a carbon copy of yesterday's opener as CSUDH took an early lead behind a Josh Flores RBI double, an RBI fielder's choice and a 2RBI single by Fernando Gallegos, only to have the Gators answer with four in the 5th to take a 6-4 lead.

SFSU added single runs in the 6th and 7th off a pair of Toro relievers, and a late rally that included an RBI double by Polizzi came up short in the 7-5 loss.

Polizzi banged three hits with Conlan and Gallegos belting two each, but SFSU got a big game from Marc Lindsay (2-5, 3RBI) in the win.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11 am on Toro Field.
