Gators Chomp Way to 7-5 Win to Open CCAA Series

CARSON -- A three-run first inning provided the impetus for visiting San Francisco State as the Gators handed host Cal State Dominguez Hills a 7-5 setback to open the CCAA four-game set today at Toro Field.

Kamran Young continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-5 performance, while Adrian Guzman (pictured) drove in a pair of runs from the 9-spot as CSUDH fell to 13-12, 8-9 CCAA, dropping its third-straight game.

The Gators got to Toro starter Winston Lavendier early, touching him for three runs on a bases-clearing double by Matt Vera, the first of his three hits on the day.

CSUDH answered with two in the bottom of the first, with Guzman driving home Johnny Palmer before Brandon Polizzi was plunked with the bases filled to bring home Kevin Brown, who walked on four pitches.

After SFSU earned a run in the 4th, Guzman got it back with a booming double to the left-center field gap to bring home Brown, who collected the first hit of his college career earlier in the frame.

SFSU, however, scored three runs over the next two innings to seemingly put the game out of reach, before the Toros crept closer in the 9th with a pair of runs before reliever Cory Davis survived his own tenuous situation to preserve the win for the Gators.

Young, Guzman and Palmer all notched two hits in the loss, with Lavendier falling to 5-2 after allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.

Reliever TyRay Gatewood again was dominant, fanning three of eight batters faced in 2.0 inings of work.

The two teams continue their four-game set tomorrow morning with a doubleheader, with first pitch set for 11 am on Toro Field.  Both games will be streamed on the Toro Sports Network.
