Bats Silenced as Pioneers Take Finale En Route to Series Win

HAYWARD -- Cal State East Bay's Alex Vesia allowed eight hits to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the series finale today, but the Toros managed just one run as the Pios took a 3-1 win, also taking the series by the same tally.

Kamran Young continued his torrid hitting with two hits, with Adrian Guzman (pictured) driving home the lone run of the game.

The game was scoreless heading into the third when Daryl Donerson led off the frame wtih a booming double to left center.  Guzman wasted little time bringing him in, roping an 0-1 pitch to center to plate the speedy freshman.

Toro starter Jeffrey Gogue was cruising through the first three frames having retired all nine batters faced, but a leadoff bunt single by Marcus Wise in the bottom of the 4th spoiled the perfect bid, and a double two batters later tied the game at 1-1.

The Pios kept their momentum going the next inning as Wise again proved damaging, lacing a two-out single to center on a 2-2 pitch, bringing home two runners for a 3-1 lead.

CSUDH made its last charge in the 8th as it loaded the bases with two out, but Vesia induced a fly out from Brady Conlan to escape the jam, with Angel Lara holding on for the save in the 9th.

The Toros, who fell to 13-11, 8-8,  look to regroup at home next weekend against San Francisco State, with the four-game set kicking off on Friday at 3 pm.
