Triumvirate Pushes Toros Past East Bay in Game One as CSUDH Splits Twinbill

HAYWARD -- The combination of senior Winston Lavendier, reliever TyRay Gatewood and slugger Kamran Young again proved a winning one as the Toros evened their series at Cal State East Bay with a 3-1 win in game one of today's twinbill.

The hosts returned the favor in the nightcap with a 5-2 win, moving the Toros to 13-10, 8-7 CCAA.

Continuing to swing a hot bat, Young spotted the Toros a lead in the 4th with a solo blast on the first pitch he saw to break a scoreless tie, before Danny Matienzo belted an RBI single to put the Toros up 2-0.

The Pioneers cut their deficit in half with a single run in the 6th, before Matienzo got it back with a sacrifice fly in the 8th for an insurance run.

That was plenty for starter Lavendier, who earned his fifth win of the year by scattering 7 hits  with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work, while Gatewood tossed the final 2.2 innings of work, fanning three without a walk.

Johnny Palmer, making a start in right, went 2-for-3 with a walk in the win.

The nightcap saw the Toros take a 2-0 lead after Palmer drove home Brady Conlan with an RBI single in the 2nd, before Young connected for his second long ball of the game in the 4th.

The Pios, however, got the final say in the nightcap with a four-spot in the 5th to chase starter Kevin Brown, and a single run an inning later for an insurance score.

The Toros managed just four hits in game two.

The teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11 am on Pioneer Field.
