Cortinas Goes Yard But Toros Drop Two to Open 2015

SAN MARCOS -- Redshirt sophomore Jazmyne Cortinas made her Cal State Dominguez Hills debut a memorable one by clubbing a two-run jack in game one, but host Cal State San Marcos spoiled today's season opener with a 4-2 win, and followed that with a 7-4 victory to take today's sweep.

The 2015 season got off to a rough start as the Cougars scored single runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, while the Toros managed just two singles through the first three frames.

That all changed in the 6th, however, as Cortinas turned on a 1-2 pitch with Alexandra Mootry on first and launched her first-career home run as a Toro to knot the game at 2-2.

The euphoria didn't last long as CSUSM answered with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the frame to account for the game's final runs.

Freshman Ivy Campbell notched her first collegiate hit as part of six total singles, while junior Jamie Duran took the complete-game loss, allowing three earned runs while fanning one Cougar.

The nightcap looked to be a carbon copy of the opener as the Cougars took a 4-0 lead after 3.0 innings, while the Toros were retired in four consecutive innings.

In the 5th, however, the Toros plated their first run of the game on a Cougar error, and then tied the game at 4-4 an inning later, with the big blow coming on a Kaci McGinnis 2RBI single, and one by Campbell.

Like the opener, however, the Cougars answered in the bottom half their inning with three unearned runs, coming on three Toro errors.

True freshman Alyssa Valinches took the loss, allowing 10 hits in her first game as a Toro, fanning three with one walk.

CSUDH travels to Las Vegas next weekend for the Desert Stinger Classic, taking on Azusa Pacific for the first of five games on Friday, February 13, with first pitch set for 11:30 am.
