Toros Tie for CCAA Lead After Playoff-Like 59-58 Win Over Jacks

CARSON -- Clinging to a one-point lead over CCAA league-leader in Humboldt State with Jacks A'Jaee Foster driving towards the would-be winning bucket with 5.6 seconds left, senior everything Talia Rayford made the last of four blocks on the night count, stuffing Foster as time expired to give the Toros a heart-stopping 59-58 win, and a tie for first place in the CCAA with HSU.

The Toros move to 14-2 and 19-5 overall, just three wins away from tying the program record for wins with six games left in the regular season, including four at home.

"Neither team played its best game and we feel fortunate to have pulled out the win tonight, and I'm extremely proud of our tenacity and resolve down the stretch," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, on getting the job done tonight.

"Talia played outstanding defense, Breezy (Breanne Garcia) continues to provide a spark with her passionate play and the nonstarters who subbed in as a group in the second half rallied us after we were stuck in a rut.

"This was a total team effort, and now we have to get ready again for next week's opponents."

Both teams started out like heavyweight fighters, with a Tayler Champion three at 16:47 giving CSUDH a 5-point edge early.

The Toro lead reached as much as six points twice, the last at 26-20 coming at 4:40, until the Jacks went on a 6-2 run to close the half, and trail by just two entering the break.

Buckets by Monay Lee and Kaaron King to open the second-half scoring pushed CSUDH's lead to 32-26, before a Jack run closed their gap to just one on two occasions, with a pair of Megan Shields free throws at 12:28 giving HSU a 38-37 lead.

A pair of baskets pushed the Jack lead to five, with a triple at 8:31 giving HSU a 45-39 lead until an up-and-under layup by Jade Hudson put an end to the Toro scoring drought.

Jae Shin answered with a triple on HSU's next possession to make it 48-41, only to see the Toros go on a 15-2 run to go up 56-50 with just 2:23 on the clock.

Humboldt, however, made its final push count, getting to within 59-58 with 22 seconds left after Shin drained a long trey.

Needing to foul, the Jacks fouled the first person they could in Lee, and the usually sure free throw shooter missed both, setting up the fantastic finish.

Garcia led all scorers with 17 points and six boards, adding three steals and two assists, with Lee finishing with 12 points, seven boads, three assists and two swipes.

HSU used its size to the tune of a 48 to 37 rebounding edge, but its seven more turnovers resulted in six more points for CSUDH.

CSUDH continues its league hosting duties next week, hosting CS Monterey Bay on Friday, for a 5:30 pm first tip.
